Mentoring opportunities at the UCL Academy

22 November 2016

UCL and mentoring charity Brightside are recruiting volunteers to act as student mentors for small groups of 12-14 and 16-18 year old students at UCL Academy, the school sponsored by UCL in Swiss Cottage, North London.

Mentors are inspiring role models who support young people to raise their aspirations, grow in confidence, and develop key skills that will help them make confident and informed decisions about their future, and ultimately achieve their potential. Considering study and career options can be daunting, especially for young people who do not have family or friends they can ask for advice. You will offer advice about educational progression, subject choices, post-16 and higher education options. By sharing your own experiences, you can help your mentees feel more confident about their options for the future.

How does it work?

The programme will launch in January 2017 and will consist of 4 face-to-face meet-ups supplemented by online mentoring. The Brightside mentoring platform is packed with resources to use with your mentees, covering topics such as study tips, careers, university, money management and independent living. Full training will be provided and all travel expenses will be reimbursed through the VSU.

What’s the commitment?

  • All mentors must undergo an enhanced DBS check and attend a mentor training session.
  • Commit to attending all 4 face-to-face meetups at UCL Academy. These will take place between January and March 2017, drawing to a close before the exam period. Each meet-up will last 2 hours.
  • Commit 1-2 hours per week to online mentoring via Brightside’s online platform.

Why get involved?

  • Gain satisfaction by helping young people to succeed.
  • Use your existing skills and experiences to inspire others.
  • Develop new skills.
  • Gain experience working with young people for your CV.
