Benita Mehra, CEng, MBA, MSc, BSc (Eng), MIET, MWES is of Indian heritage having been born and brought up in SE England/London. Engineering was in her blood, and this led her to selecting her first degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Upon graduation she joined the airport operator BAA, and with their support she attained her chartered status having been seconded from BAA into a manufacturing company. She was then given the opportunity to undertake an MSc in Construction Management at Heriot-Watt University, which led onto being responsible for large multimillion pound construction related projects such as the terminal buildings at Heathrow and the redevelopment of Stansted airport. She attained an MBA at Henley while still working at BAA, allowing her to move into maintenance and staff management, and was given the responsibility for the runways at Heathrow and a large team of engineers.
Family beckoned and she gained a non-executive board position for a housing association, to ensure that governance and risk was paramount when taking decisions. As this was a part time role, she decided that she would try the interim market, and has now worked for the NHS as an interim manager for a few years.
She has spoken at schools and for the IET on careers for women in engineering and decided to join the Women’s Engineering Society. Benita was elected as President of WES on 10th October 2015.
