Professor Polina Bayvel receives the UCL Consultants award from UCL’s President & Provost, Malcolm Grant

The UCL Consultants Award 2013 has been given to Professor Polina Bayvel. Professor Bayvel is the head of the Optical Networks Group in the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, and has been instrumental in setting up a partnership with Huawei Technologies to explore techniques for increasing data rates and transmission distances in high-capacity optical communications systems and networks.

This award recognises this successful consultancy agreement. To date, funding from Huawei to UCL has exceeded £500K.  The UCL-Huawei collaboration is expected to grow from strength to strength, helping to achieve UCL’s ambitions for increasing knowledge transfer and supporting Huawei R&D efforts on the development of next-generation optical transmission systems. An example would be Huawei’s project partnership in the £4.8m EPSRC programme grant UNLOC – unlocking the capacity of optical communications.

Commenting on Polina’s award, UCL Consultants’ Managing Director Roger de Montfort said:

“We were delighted to nominate Polina Bayvel as UCLC’s Consultant of the Year for 2013.  She and her team have developed an exciting collaboration  with a major player in the communications industry with the help of UCL Consultants.  Moreover, she has championed our work for many years and we believe she is a role model for consultancy activity at UCL and how it can contribute to academic objectives.”

A video about the work of Professor Bayvel with Huawei is available on the UCL Consultants website.
