Learn about sustainable living in the heart of Wales…
Britain’s largest green bookshops, a vegan and vegetarian restaurant, low energy houses on 7 acres of interactive displays on sustainable living can all be found in the Centre for Alternative Technology along with more. The eco-centre, located in Powys, mid-Wales, opened in 1973, housed in a disused slate quarry, is dedicated to demonstrating and teaching sustainable development. On the contrary to the title, it not only boasts facilities promoting sustainable technology, but also sustainable living, nestled in the middle of nature itself, flourishing on its own site-wide electricity grid powered by renewable energy, overlooking the stunning Snowdonia National Park.
Having earned the title of UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the centre has boosted the environmental emphasis in the entire area. No wonder it has become the largest tourist attraction in the area, offering something for everyone, of all ages, from courses of variable length on sustainable architecture, renewable energy or even organic farming.
