Environmental Engineering students win Royal Academy of Engineering Advanced Awards

Two students, Alexa Bruce and Giulio Ferrini on UCL Engineering’s Environmental Engineering course have received Royal Academy of Engineering Advanced Awards. Only 40 of these are given out per year, to students who have shown exceptional evidence of leadership potential.

Giulio Ferrini

Giulio Ferrini has a strong interest in sustainability. In 2009 he organised an awareness campaign around water issues in Ethiopia, working with primary schools and local communities, and he will be returning both to water issues and Sub-Saharan Africa this summer when he travels to Ghana with Global Brigades to design and build a rainwater collection and sanitation scheme.

“Competition for the award was extremely tough and I was not expecting to be selected. It is an incredible opportunity to form a network of connections with fellow engineers across the country. It will allow me to undertake valuable experiences and help me find my path in the industry.”

Alexa Bruce

Alexa Bruce has been involved with UCLU Engineers Without Borders for 2 years,  during which she has been a dedicated committee member, raised thousands of pounds in sponsorship, and led the 2011 group who installed basic sanitation in a Peruvian village. She said of the award:

“I feel pretty privileged to be in the company of the other winners. The award is an incredible opportunity and I hope I can fully utilise its benefits.”

The Academy sees these awards as “a programme to provide support and motivation to some of the most exceptional engineering undergraduates in UK universities”. The winners of the Advanced Award receive leadership training, a mentor, help with creating a personal development plan and £5,000 towards implementing their plan over the next 3 years. Further information about the awards can be found HERE, and we encourage outstanding first-year students to think about applying for these awards next year.

Congratulations to Alexa and Giulio!
