STEaPP

The STEaPP approach is applied and global. Sitting on the interface between research and policy makers, we explore, experiment with, and improve the ways scientific and engineering expertise and knowledge are engaged with public decision-making. We work across disciplines and cultures to achieve impact in government, private and public sector organisations at a local, national and international level.

We have expertise on the technical and analytic tools of the natural and engineering sciences, as well as the frameworks of social and political science, and policy analysis. Current focus areas for STEaPP include energy and environment, local national and international infrastructures, humanitarian and sustainable development, surveillance and security, and digital and cyber. Our research takes place in the UK, Indonesia, USA, China, Brazil and Canada.

As part of London’s global university the Department is becoming an educational ambassador for science and public policy. STEaPP is building collaborative partnerships across UCL both within the BEAMS School of Built Environment, Engineering, Mathematical and Physical Sciences, and with the policy, laws and social science expertise across UCL’s other Faculties. We work closely with policy practitioners such as the Parliamentary Office for Science and Technology, global organisations such as the World Bank, and corporations such as Arup.

Our Masters programmes in Science and Public Policy, and Engineering and Public Policy will welcome their inaugural classes in Autumn 2014. STEaPP also offers opportunities for PhD studentships and executive education.
